Quickly gaining attention as one of the finest youth chamber ensembles in the DC area, the Choral Arts Youth Choir is comprised of “all-star” singers from high school choral programs through the DC area. Participants have the opportunity to build their skills and make connections with other talented and passionate peers, as well as participate in exciting performance opportunities, often with the Choral Arts Chorus and the Choral Arts Chamber Singers.
Auditioning for the Choral Arts Youth Choir
Auditions for the Choral Arts Youth Choir are primarily submitted electronically. The Director of the Youth Choir reviews all applications and may request to hear a live audition.
When should I apply?
We accept and review audition applications on a rolling basis throughout the year. However, we may hold your application for review depending on where we are in our season and our current roster needs. Live auditions are generally held in the summer in advance of the following season.
Please contact the Artistic Coordinator at any time during the year with audition questions.
Please read the following information carefully if interested in auditioning for the Choral Arts Youth Choir.
There are no dues for singing members of the Choral Arts Youth Choir. Please note that all members of the Youth Choir will have the opportunity to sing in all performance opportunities in a given season. You do not have to participate in all projects to be a member.
New members will be given a schedule ahead of the season and asked to indicate their availability. More detailed schedules will be released closer to each concert opportunity.
The Audition Process
Apply for an Audition
Please first submit an audition application. A complete application consists of the following items:
An mp3 recording of an a cappella solo of your choice. If you are accustomed to solo singing, prepare something you know well that shows off your voice. If not, choose something with which you are comfortable (a hymn, folk song, or your voice part from a choral work). Please label this recording as “LastName_FirstName_Solo_Date”
An mp3 recording arpeggios or another vocalization of your choice on “ah,” beginning in the middle of your range. Repeat the exercise, each time a half step higher, until you have reached the upper limit of your useful range. Please announce at the beginning of the recording the note you start on. “LastName_FirstName_Vocalizations_Date”
An mp3 recording of a brief excerpt (no more than 3 minutes) of your voice part’s line in a choral piece you are currently working on or have recently performed.
A brief recommendation from a voice teacher or choral director (can be emailed to email@example.com, or directly to firstname.lastname@example.org).
Please note: while the Youth Choir Director makes the majority of admission decisions based on the pre-screening and recommendation, a member of the Choral Arts staff may contact you to schedule a live audition or request more information. Live auditions are most often held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church on the grounds of the National Cathedral. Specific location details will be sent to singers ahead of the audition.
