Incoming Executive Director Maria Mathieson

Maria Mathieson, a distinguished executive in the field of music and arts education and has made a profound impact serving as the Executive Director of The Peabody Preparatory at The Johns Hopkins University. With a career dedicated to strategic growth, program innovation, and community engagement, Mathieson has been instrumental in expanding access to high-quality arts education and expanding opportunities for performers of all ages and backgrounds. Prior to her tenure at Peabody, Mathieson served as Head of Music Education at Levine Music, where her expertise in program development, financial management, and strategic planning has established her as a leading force in arts administration.

As Executive Director of The Peabody Preparatory, Mathieson oversaw a dynamic performing arts ecosystem. She spearheaded major initiatives that have not only increased student participation in skill-based learning but also introduced groundbreaking programs such as Peabody Pro (artist professional development), Peabody Plus (adult arts education) and Peabody Prescribe (performing arts and health). These programs provide artists with critical resources to hone their craft, develop their careers, improve health outcomes through the arts, and engage with diverse audiences.

A passionate advocate for arts opportunity and innovation, Mathieson holds an MBA in Arts Innovation from the Global Leaders Institute and an MBA from the University of Maryland Global Campus. She has completed executive leadership programs at The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and the National Guild for Community Arts Education. She also serves on the boards of Equity Arc, the National Capital Brass Band, and the USA Southern Staff Songsters, furthering her commitment to enriching the performing arts landscape.
